It's December 1st, it's officially winter, and it's snowing in Toronto. What is it about winter that feels so magic? Even for those of us that hate the cold, it’s impossible not to watch snow falling, barely making a sound, first dusting and then blanketing the landscape in white, and not feel enchanted.
I’ve posted before about one of my very favourite books I own, basically a love letter to the season. It’s a book bringing together all the most beautiful and evocative pieces of writing about winter, and now that the time of year has rolled around again, it’s resumed its former position of glory on my bedside table, being picked up and delved into at regular intervals.
It’s not just writing I turn to though to make myself feel all the feels and get all the vibes of this time of year. I love books and films in equal measure, and there are more than a few scenes that spring to mind when I think of dreamy snowy scenes. The hard thing is separating Christmas films from winter films, and while festive themes do crop up in some of my favourites listed below, this is a collection assembled purely for the way in which they cater to my absolute love of winter. What do you think, have I left any classics off the list? I’d love to know your favourites!
A Little Princess
I don't think there's any nineties girl out there who didn't love this film, but no scene ever captivated me as much as this one, where Sarah and her Fairy Godmother-esque next door neighbour share a moment of spellbound snow worship.
You know the scene. Everybody knows the scene. Edward makes snow, an angelic redheaded Winona Ryder proceeds to twirl as the snow falls around her, for her. Cue emotional music, cue movie gold.
Harry Potter (any/all of them)
There's no circumstances under which I wouldn't want to be in J.K. Rowling's world, but let's be honest, is there anything more magical than Hogwarts in the snow? Fun fact: I was embarrassingly brought to tears by the experience of seeing the model scale of Hogwarts in the snow when I visited the film studios in winter. The castle dusted in white and the swelling theme song were too much to bear.
Sex and the City
In my favourite scene in the Sex and the City film, Carrie shows what true friendship is when she treks it across New York City in the snow to be there when Miranda needs her, though she would never say it. Has NYC ever looked so magical?
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
I know that in the story, the eternal winter is supposed to be a bad thing, but honestly it's just too beautiful to be bummed about.
There is nothing more wholesome in this world than the 1994 adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic novel Little Women, and no scene more delicious than the opening scene, in which winter never looked so damn cosy.
Bridget Jones Diary
Bridget running through the snowy streets of London in her leopard print pants and trainers has got to be one of the most iconic visuals in the entire romcom genre. I am yet to see snow doing that thing where it just drifts around the air aimlessly rather than actually falling, but you can bet when it does happen, I'll have a few more layers on!
A whole film dedicated to the magic of winter... what more need I say?
