Do the thing.

A couple of weeks ago, I went to Rome for the weekend. Friends I love who I haven’t seen in too long were there. Beyoncé and Jay Z were performing. Gelato and pasta and the golden light of the eternal city were calling me and so I answered. I went, if only for a weekend.

It wasn’t a financially or logistically sensible decision. It probably wasn’t the most responsible or rational or well-thought-out call I ever made.

But when I am 90 (touch wood) and looking back on my life, I want what I see to be crammed with these moments. Moments that resulted from decisions that put happiness and enjoyment at their centre, because what is anything actually worth if we’re not happy? What is money in the bank compared to moments grasped? What is old age without the ride it takes to get there?

And I hope – as I sit there looking back – I do it with a friend by my side and a gin and tonic in my hand and a smile on my face. Go do the thing. Book the ticket. Drink the wine. Prioritise joy, whatever source it may come from for you... we all deserve it.

“None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an afterthought. Eat the delicious food. Walk in the sunshine. Jump in the ocean. Say the truth you’re carrying in your heart like hidden treasure. Be silly. Be kind. Be weird. There’s no time for anything else.”
