With Hip Hop-eration stars Maynie (65) and Kara (94)
This year has been an incredible one for New Zealand film, and the best one I can imagine to be lucky enough to be working in the film industry in this country. One film this little country I'm quite proud to call mine has recently produced is heartwarming flick Hip Hop-eration.
Check out the trailer below. This is honestly one of the most inspiring and life-affirming films I have seen in a long time. I know myself, and I admit I am someone who reflects on things a lot and is more easily affected by things than other people, but I challenge anyone not to be moved by this gorgeous tale of Waiheke Islanders (a small Island off Auckland's east coast) in their 70s, 80s and 90s who take up hip hop dancing and travel to the world champs in Las Vegas. A reminder that age doesn't have to be a limitation, but a tool to do what it is that you truly want.
I was lucky enough to work hands on with some of the cast members of this film, including the group's two oldest members - Maynie Thompson (95) and Kara Nelson (94). Two days with them has given me a new appreciation and understanding of what it is to get older. The numbers of age are solid fact, but the mindset of age is a choice, and through example these wonderful women showed me the kind of senior citizen I want to be. Thank you both for a fantastic experience.
Hip Hop-eration opened in NZ cinemas today. If you get a chance, please get along to see it - I can promise you'll be glad you did!
P.S The Hip Hop-eration dance crew have been officially granted the title of the world's oldest dance group, how cool is that?!
